In late September 2019 ManCameraMartain, LauraCameraWife and I arrived in Isigny-Sur-Mer. Our mission was to shoot footage for a film. A no-budget guerrilla operation beginning at the Eastern edge of town near the gates of the huge Dairy factory. Using Google Earth I'd pre-selected the first camera set-up. We improvised the rest of the shots as opportunity presented whilst I performed the simple story board I'd made over the summer.

La Bataille D'Isigny. Part 1. Les Bittes... D'Amarrage.
Listening to local radio in 2010 I over heard the tale of Hugues D'Isigny. He was a soldier in William the Bastards army back in 1066. Profiting in the Norman conquest Hugues D'Isigny's decedents eventually emigrated to Canada and then to the USA. Time and dislocation contracted the family name. One of Hugues decedents had success in Hollywood, America and then the world. This descendant was Walt Disney. Isigny-sur-mer is small town less than 80km to the south of where my army and I are based.
In December 2018 I visited Isigny-sur-mer for the first time in consideration of Disney. A few weeks later in January 2019 I went back for a second look with man-camera-Martain. Inspired, I asked m-c-M to take a picture of me whilst I posed. Conducting research online I discovered the French term for Quai side mooring posts is 'bittes d'amarrages'. I was immediately struck by this, because in French, the word 'Bitte' is common vulgar slang for the male sex organ... roughly equivalent to 'cock' in English.
In July 2019 I visited Isigny again. I focused on the fishing quai just West of the town centre and took photos of my paper soldiers arranged about the mooring posts as if they were conducting a reconnaissance - as reported at the time on the Battle Of walkerloo Blog.
Symbolic pieces deployed across the model included:
The Chinese Miners Marching With My Dad's Pit Banner ;
Google Panto Horse Corporate Beasts ;
and a few proto-type myTHself Trinity paper soldier figurines not yet published.
QUICK REVIEW*
I began making paper soldiers in 2000 - I didn't really know they were a thing.
In early 2008 I took my production industrial. Raising capital I had 180,000 soldiers made in a factory in Chatillon-sur-Sienne. The paper soldiers were printed near Paris with vegetable inks. They were glued onto two sides of a re-cycled cardboard and then precisely die cut. In June of 2008 whilst the 193rd battle of Waterloo anniversary re-enactment raged all about I launched my army of toy soldiers before the public in the museum of Napoleons last HQ. Over the coming months I took my soldiers to museums and events all about culminating in a season of Christmas artisan markets in London. But there was opposition.
Star Wars launched its movie based toys in 1977. I was in the first childhood cohort to encounter the global toy phenomenon. Ever since that success, legions of plastic movie related toys have advanced across the toy shop shelves to capture the imagination of children around the globe.
But toy soldiers are made for real pretend war - specialists. In Spring 2009 I began to lead my troops in real pretend play battle with the plastic toys from movies and TV that are their opposition.
I identified three major sources of spumic plastic toy adversary. The movie studios of Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel. Disney bought Pixar in 2006 ($7.4 billion). Disney bought Marvel late 2009 ($4 billion). Disney bought Star Wars late 2012 ($4 billion). And so my three major adversaries became one.
I prosecuted play war with my soldiers in short films, text and pictures. But against the largest mytho-picture controlling corporation the world has ever seen - an entity who's form boils via global propagation, sale by the billion of material objects under cover of all pervasive legalistic control. My paper soldiers were over whelmed. I realised I must devote more of myTHself to their mission.

'Les Trois Ages du Dragon Baligan, myTHself et Autres Monstres' Opening Show Night. Batiment Bleu, Dielette, 27th Oct , 2021.
I talked a few thousand people around my temporary studio space over my 4 month residence in Dielette. Few of the visitors came to see my work specifically. Most approached a painter working on a large painting in a large open window out of curiosity. I would explain the picture as I worked and often invite them on a tour of my work inside the space. It proved an excellent way to evolve a lyrical talk around my pictures.
On the opening night I performed the tour around the pictures before an invited public including the Port Captain and the Mayor. It was a mythical journey that invoked myTHself Trinity.
Station 1: The Easter Legs. The first public project I made after moving to France. A Christmas Stocking meets an Easter Egg in a Gift Factory on St. Valentines night (animated film). The offspring of this mythical union of the best selling Christmas gift and the best selling Easter gift should be able to merchandise the *uck out the rest of the planet.... right? But a tension exists within the group... (after almost 20yrs live play action www.EasterLegs.com is under threat of tech extinction. Ever since S.Jobs denied Flash in his pods etc. hmmm... the same Jobs who sat on the Disney board after he sold them Pixar in 2006... an obvious conspiracy against the EasterLegs in the flash... ?
Station 3: The Tale Of Christopher Wanker. Over the summer it this was this picture that got visitors embarrassed attention. Fair enough. It is a picture made to project so. But always as I talked people through 'The Tale Of Christopher Wanker' and the origins of his phallus the trepidation turned to understanding, giggles and smiles. At the origin of myTHself, the word I made up to author the picture. Christopher Wanker the Fantasy Banker, his cock is London's cock as I discovered it to be upon pasting my bedroom/office walls with a pair of giant scale road atlases to visualise library gleaned road haulage company data in the making of my business plan that was to make me a millionaire advertising media mogul... SMACM (strategicMobileAdvertisingCampaignMedia) ... or not. SMACM de-AD(vertising)... hmmm. West End, East End, Bell End? Londong? Oh that's why they're all called Cockneys.... I no longer wanted to be a real business man... but a part of me had already become a fantasy one... Christopher Wanker the Fantasy Banker has been with me ever since.... my toxic male alter-ego? my biggest swinging get the business done self? the holder of my tool for mass cultural penetration and insemination...
Station 4: Les Trois Ages Du Dragon Baligan. Man vs Beast... using the power of faith and its symbols. The picture shows St.Germain surfing into Diélette on his flaming wagon wheel (nuclear warning adjusted Raleigh Burner wheel) and petrifying the child eating dragon beast Baligan beneath the cliffs of Flamanville... as I myTHself Trinity go on to tell the story of how another child preferring dragon beast Disney is gonna get it... using the power of my faith.... and my pictures
Station 5: La Bataille d'Isigny Strategic Model. (LBdISM). An Improvised object coming together days before the show. I needed a pictorial object to introduce and link the studio space in Dielette and further my mission to manifest an assault on Disney... "In 1066 Hugues Suhard d'Isigny a peasant soldier left Normandy in the army William the Bastard to seek his fortune. 900 years later in 1966 one of Hugues descendants died in California leaving behind a commercial empire that had begun to capture the imagination of the world, he was Walt Disney. The Battle of Isigny strategic model enabled me to explain my surreal assault on the corporate beast via the ancestral hometown of foes creator.
Friend and picture making collaborator Martin Andrieux/ManCameraMartain along with a few others agreed to film and photo the event. These stills from his films and photos of others present at the show.

A Global Pandemic, A Local Monster & myTHself.
Wish lads had ya gobs n'arl tellyers aboot an arful storee,
Wisht lads had ya gobs coz arl tellyers aboot tha warrr-m.
I grew up in a valley with a legend of a terrible worm that continues to feed on my imagination. Soon after I moved to Normandy I heard tell about a dragon that had once terrorized everyone around here.
The first time I walked toward the sea from my home along the sunken, hedge lined roads and scattered granite farm houses I discovered an incongruous brick housing estate similar to those housing estates I'd grown up amongst in North East England. Walking through that estate I came to the high granite cliffs to see the sea and the sea cooled nuclear reactors built below.
The brick housing estate had been built by a German industrialist to house the workers for the coastal iron mine he had bought and modernized in 1907.
At the beach as a child I was fascinated by all the blue lines and marks on my fathers legs. He had been a coal miner for the first 15years of his working life and these were the tattoos the coal dust had made on his body from small injuries whilst working.
Last summer I thought of making a picture of the local monster - the dragon, the mine, the power station. I wrote this short passage to frame the picture...
In the 4C the dragon Baligan ran amok around here, the only way the local population could appease him was to feed him their fresh children every so often. Until one day a cross wielding Irish man (Saint Germaine Le Scot [?]) came surfing up the beach on a flaming wagon wheel (as seen in the local church stained glass windows) Deploying intense devout faith power he banish/petrified the monster beneath the high sea cliffs of Flamanville. Hosanna! On witnessing the power of faith to smite the beast everyone turned Christian.
Wish lads had ya gobs n'arl tellyers aboot an ar-ful storee,
Wisht lads had ya gobs coz arl tellyers aboot tha warrr-m.
(here's Bryan Ferry singing the lines above in the song from the valley we both come from... this 80's movie by Ken Russel is based on the same Lambton Worm legend - mostly dubbed into Hindi )
